Racing Faith: Beyond the Finish Line: Pt.1

What’s good family! It brings me immense joy to introduce you to a remarkable young man that I've had the privilege of mentoring and coaching here at Oakwood University – Elek King. Elek's journey is nothing short of inspiring, and recently, he, along with his fellow classmate Ryan Williams, organized a amazing event named the "Dash for Cash." This event, sponsored by my foundation, The I Am Greater Foundation, was a huge success, attracting over 70 attendees and raising $450 for students facing financial clearance or in need of support for college expenses.

Elek, a sophomore hailing from Detroit, Michigan, is majoring in Business Administration: Management. His passion for track and field began in high school, where he participated in a myriad of events such as the 400m dash, high jump, shot put, relays, and more. Despite facing challenges, Elek's unwavering commitment to his faith and principles has been a beacon of inspiration for those around him.

Now, let's hear directly from Elek as he shares his story with you:

Elek King's Journey in Track and Field: A Story of Faith and Triumph

Hello, everyone! I'm Elek King, a 19-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, currently in my sophomore year at Oakwood University, majoring in Business Administration: Management. My decision to come to Oakwood was deeply rooted in my desire to grow closer to Christ. In high school, I dabbled in both track and field and basketball. However, the victories and personal growth I experienced in track drew me closer to the sport.

I participated in various events, including the 400m dash, high jump, shot put, 4x200m relay, 200m dash, and 4x400m relay. Focusing on the 400m and high jump in my senior year led me to the opportunity to race in the state championship. It was a pinnacle moment for me, but I made the decision to choose my convictions over attending the state championship.

Choosing my faith over my passion of track was very hard for me, but it set the tone for my future endeavors. In the fall of 2022, I joined Oakwood University, knowing they lacked a track program. Driven by my love for the sport, I aimed to implement change. Starting the club in April 2023, my burning passion for track and field birthed an initiative to provide opportunities for student-athletes.

In the fall semester of 2023, I reach out to Mr.Richardson for some mentoring to help me get this idea off the ground, later that month I met Ryan Williams, a second-semester freshman who shared my passion and the rest was history. Together, we orchestrated "The Ca$h Da$h" on October 29, 2023, attracting over 70 attendees and raising $450, with the potential to offer $225 to male and female racers. Our focus is on bettering participants and using future events to raise funds, ultimately supporting students with tuition.

As we stride forward, I firmly believe Oakwood University is the perfect institution to invest in this project. The motto, "Enter to Learn. Depart to Serve," aligns with my aspirations for the potential Track & Field program we want to implement at Oakwood University. Track and Field, beyond being a sport, instills community, harmony, and daily motivation derived from the encouragement of coaches, captains, and teammates.

Elek's story is one of resilience, faith, and a commitment to creating positive change. Stay tuned for more updates on the incredible journey of Elek King and the beginning track and field program at Oakwood University!
